Question of the Week ~ 07/14/09

Is your hometown famous for anything?

Well, mine's not really famous for anything but Main Street is Route 66 so there are folks that come through travelling the "Mother Road".  There was a small fort in Baxter during the Civil War that was attacked by Quantrill's Raiders in 1863.  You can read more about my little town here:

I will check that out-looks interesting!

Our local town is in the news right now.........the local undertaker is accused of murdering his wife last summer and dumped her body in their swimming pool to make it looked like she drowned! Evidence shows she was hit on head with an object, kicked and strangled. There would have been a great deal of blood loss. No evidence of blood in the pool or the surrounding area.It was all cleaned up and a Pine-Sol odor when police and paramedics arrived. He also had a pregnant, married mistress close by the funeral home and according to her statements to police and their emails,he was going to tell his wife that night!. The child has been born and according to his attorneys opening statements today, the child is the undertaker's,but this is still no reason that he killed his wife. The defense is saying an intruder killed her, dumped her body in the pool and cleaned up the mess-leaving no evidence! The trial started today, they expect to call up to 200 witnesses and to drag out for three weeks.  I told my hubby if he wants to get rid of me not to do it this way-he would have no clue how to clean up the blood and leave no evidence!

WE have a really neat old jail that was built in 1809. The architect, Robert Mills, later designed the Washington Monument and the Treasury Bldg. in D.C. It is the first truly fireproof Bldg. in the US with walls 24 inches thick. Also had arched shaped ceilings which kept it naturally cool. Since this is a Quaker town, there was also job training. There were some hanging- those prisoners were kept in an octagonal shaped room on the second level-harder to escape from there. Also was a debtors prison wing. Simon Gratz, a Philadelphian, who helped finance the Revolutionary War was in that section. His daughter, Rebecca was the model for the female character in the book, Ivanhoe. The Boston Strangler was there for an assault he committed while he was stationed at near by Fort Dix.

Forgive me for all the information as I was a docent there a number of years ago.

Mt. Holly, NJ was founded in 1683.

My actual address Lumberton, NJ was famous or infamous for a flood 5 years ago where 20 mostly privately owned dams which were not well tended to collapsed in domino fashion after we had 12 inches of rain in a 24 hour period of time, 7/13-7/14 flooding several towns along the way. The National evening news lead off with the War in Iraq and Lumberton, NJ
