RE: Question of the week:11-06-09

I now am taking down some Halloween stuff and adding a few Thanksgiving touches to the fall decor.I am in charge of decorating a room in a historic mansion in my town for the holiday season. We do that the Monday after Thanksgiving. After that I decorate my house. I have a collection of over 100 snowmen, so that is my theme in our combined kitchen/family room. Also, some are in our guest bathroom. I take out my small collection of PFG Nordic Christmas dishes which I mostly found in a box at a flea market for $10. Of course, the accessory pieces that I had to have to go with it from e-bay cost a whole lot more than that!! Also have a couple pieces of red Fiesta to go with the Nordic Christmas stuff. I took old cork backed placemats and sponge painted on the cork side in shades of blue and then took a large foam stamp of a snowflake and printed that in white several times on the blue background, so I have "holiday" placemats. The livingroom/diningroom is more formally dressed with rich metallic/reflective stuff. Outside I use all natural, local greens and berries especially since the neighboring town, our county seat, is the town of Mount Holly!!!!!

RE: Question of the week:11-06-09

I just read the question of the week to my husband ..he laughed and said to post that I begin decorating when my he gets off work and does it!!!LOL!he is such a wise guy! Our little community of Ransom Canyon decorates big time! Beginning the weekend after Thanksgiving we have bumper to bumper traffic  of cars, limos, hay rides, commercial buses, you name it and they come! We live on a small lake in the panhandle of Texas, just outside of Lubbock. The Geese come in by the droves or I guess I should say the flocks, and winter here. It's really wonderful to live here with all the wildlife we have.  We have been feeding an  extended family of racoons for 5 years now and they are so entertaining! We have several who wait by the garage door for Mike to pull in and feed them before he comes inside. We live in a redbrick Colonial with white pillars, and the previous owners have left (10) six foot wreathes that we put on all the pillars, also there is a garland that drapes from pillar to pillar. Our first year here Mike gave me 5 Geese decoys from Cabellas and we put red bows on the necks and  a spotlight, it looks very pretty. Inside we decorate with lots of copper in the kitchen. I have 3 varied sz. of trees in an old copper washtube that sits in the kitchen window..my America is displayed on an open hutch in the same room. I try to put pencil trees in each of the streetside windows, decorated with old rusty jingle bells and Lange stuffed birds of different kinds. In the family room we put the main tree decorated with lots of old looking ornaments, lots of raffia bows and handmade mittens. Gosh, I didn't mean to take up the whole message board. Under the main tree, I put a collection of old toys I have put together. I'm stll looking for an old jack in the box, so if anyone has one that they could part with, let me know. I just want to say how much I have enjoyed being part of the PACC, it sounds like we all have such similar tastes and it's fun to read all the decorating styles everyone incorporates. Happy Holidays Everyone! Ann

RE: Question of the week:11-06-09

I traditionally decorate the living/dining L-shaped room on Thanksgiving Eve.  We make hot cider in a big crock pot with lots of oranges, cloves & cinnamon & add a shot of Rock-n-rye while making the turkey dressing.  I run around ironing table cloths & setting 2 tables.  Last year I decided not to use poinsettia for the tables & instead used my snowball candles as centerpieces with various berry rings.  Then on to decorate the 7' pencil slim tree with my collection of old red handle cookie cutters, red bead garland, sliver jingle bells & white mini lights.  Mind you by this time I'm half cross eyed due to the rock-n-rye smile.gif  This year I'm making a matching cookie cutter wreath to hang in the window & hang artificial garland over the corner hutches all done with white mini lights.  It's not too Christmassy looking which is what I like about the look of cookie cutters & snowball candles.  A few weeks later, I decorate the family room 9' pencil slim tree with no theme at all & is much more Christmassy looking with a mix-match collection of ornaments from over the past 28 years.  I started a new tradition last year with my then 3 year old Grandson Christian.  On the fire place hearth he has a 4' slim tree to decorate with knitted mittens, hats, snowflakes, stockings etc.  He loved decorating it & of course played & re-decorated the next day...hence the "unbreakable" ornaments of my choice for him.  I hang a 6' wreath in the family room window with mostly pinecones & birds.  The outside decor are just multi colored big lights around the door & some shrubbery.  Another collection of various candy cane pillar candles on the fireplace mantel & I'm finished.

RE: Question of the week:11-06-09

I forgot to answer my own question!

I plan to start decorating tomorrow! I am housecleaning my dining room today-washing all my displayed America, till it is so shiny again! I will put my 4 ft. angel tree in there.

I want to put my 8 ft.slim, twig tree in the den on Friday. That tree has a mix of ornaments collected through the years. I also put greens and silk poinsettias in the cupboard and other places in the room.

This weekend I will decorate a 8 ft.full twig tree in my living room with glass santas from Old World,Kurt Adler and Christopher Radko. I also have a collection of larger Christopher Radko which I display on an antique hutch with my Rowe Pottery collection-including Christmas village and Santas. I also have a 3 ft. feather tree in this room with small glass Santas.

Next week I will decorate a 8 ft. silver tree in the basement family room with Coke, train and vintage vehicle ornaments-this is hubby's domain-he thinks!

I will also decorate small twig trees with miniature ornaments for both bathrooms, the office and Katie's room.

I also have many garlands, wreaths,Santas and other decorations that I work in throughout  the house.

Outside I will put lighted garland on the front fence, wreaths on everything and maybe some lights on some low shrubs out front.

I want to be finished by the end of Thanksgiving weekend-or close so I can enjoy the rest of the holiday time! I display many of my collectible Santas in a glass fronted cabinet in my upstairs hall year-round along with Santas prints.Christmas is my favorite time of the year-I could live with Christmas decorations all year long! Merry Christmas!
