I'm with you, sister---I need a vacation and it is definitely tooooo hot in my part of the world! We are planning to travel to Deadwood in the early fall. Bill's dad wants to go back and is getting a little long in the tooth to drive his motor home all the way up there alone! Debbie Miller is from Arkansas and I feel certain she can point you in the right direction for an Arkansas vacation. Northern LA is also a good place to travel! Deb Mc. practically lives in OK so maybe she could give you some ideas in that direction. We are our own little travel agency! Good luck on your trip and have fun!
The mister and I are big fans of Arkansas. Beautiful scenery. If you like arts and crafts shows, October is the time to visit. Google "War Eagle Craft Fair" for the granddaddy of all the craft shows - I think it's the 3rd weekend of October - that same weekend there are shows all over NW Arkansas. Eureka Springs is a quirky little town in that same area that's well worth a visit. Bubba's BBQ there is a treat. The Boston Mountain Scenic Highway is a great drive (or ride, if you're a biker like us). The scenery here is beautiful - bet it would be spectacular in the fall. http://www.queenwilhelmina.com/
We don't do much down Oklahoma way except go to Tulsa for a show occasionally. We drove down to the National Memorial in Oklahoma City a few months ago. Very moving.
Gee, didn't mean to write a book - maybe Debbie Miller will chime in with some more Arkansas recommendations.
Have fun!
PS Miz Margaret - If you see Marshall Bullock while you're in Deadwood, tell him Deb said hi.
Boy, we were really into Deadwood and have even purchased some books about the actual history. Would love to get there some day. Did our first road trip in years ( just in a regular car). Did a mini baseball tour to Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Both cities were fun! Downtown stadiums. Good food. Great incline car and then dinner up a MT. in Pittsburgh. Then in Cleveland wonderful botanical garden and the Rock and Roll Hall of Frame was great. Also went to Canton for the football hall of fame. Funny, with this sports them, this actually was my 60th birthday present!!!
Never been to the Midwest or Southwest at all. Oh well, someday!!!
Deb--if I see ole Bullock I'll give him your greetings. I'm looking for Trixie the *****. Wil named our beloved Trixie after her. I have always wanted to go to Mt. Rushmore (and Deadwood) so when the FIL suggested a trip--I jumped on it!
We have a Grand daddy of all fall shows in our area too. It's the covered bridge Festival. It goes for 10 days. I always take off the first day and go to it. It takes me 2 to 2 and a half hours to get there but it's worth it. I can hardly wait!
I would love to go to Vermont or in that area in the Fall sometime. I see so many pretty pictures from that vicinity.
Susan-I want to go the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! I've never been to the NE, other than DC.
Miz M-be sure you make the drive from Deadwood to Spearfish. Spearfish Canyon has just about the prettiest country I ever saw. I'd like to go back some time and see Mt Rushmore at night.
Janyce-my Mom did one of those leaf peeper bus tours through Vermont and thought it was fabulous.
It's funny, I think of Cleveland as the beginning of the Midwest and not the Northeast. We all have different perspectives! Only an 8 hour drive from our home in Southern New Jersey. Our states here are so much smaller! Even crossing Pennsylvania seemed long!!
We have some really pretty things to see in the fall in the Middle Atlantic States, also . Great fall leaves, great little old towns and our leaf color last much longer here than in Vermont. Also, not nearly as cold!!!!
When Wil was in the 4th grade, in 1996 I believe, he became very ill and we thought he might not make it. We decided to take him out of school for a couple of weeks and we went "leaf peeping". We spent a couple of weeks in the Smoky Mountains. We went camping and did all kinds of fun stuff, but, it was SO crowded we had to stand in line to go anywhere. The fall foliage was beautiful and I loved the extra time we had to spend with Wil, but I don't care if I ever "peep" another leaf again. Give me a museum and a good restaurant anytime!
