You ask the best questions, Debbie! I have to admit that I do not know a whole lot about our America and if I ever did know, I've forgotten. I don't have a cake plate but was curious about your question. The top photo is from replacements; the bottom from an ebay auction. Thelma, is the bottom one By Request? I wish I had kept the info about the By Request line.
Thats why we all need a book with every piece evry made!!! Imagine what time that would take, but i know it would be very useful and worth every penny it would cost!!! I never know how close i am to completing my collection !!! thanks debbie
Yes the top photo has little handles on sides is the original. The second photo is the "by request". I have both. I bought the original one many years ago when America was still produced and available. I bought the "by request" when it was offered.
You are so right........a book would be so great! I have the old book and it is wonderful but a new up-to-date book would be so helpful!
The by-request piece is actually a tray. Or it was sold as a tray. Anyway, if you have the glass domed cake plate cover, it fits on the tray, the tabbed cake plate and the charger plates. I usually use a dog charger for a cake plate. Excellent multi-tasking!

The glass dome fits on it great! I have my Aunt's childhood tea set displayed under the glass dome.Works great-is protected and does not collect so much dust!
Does anyone know, was the glass dome sold by Pfaltzgraff? I have not seen it offered with the cake plate and have not seen it in any Pfaltzgraff advertising. I was lucky to find one in an antique mall in Centerville, Indiana a couple of summers ago.
The glass dome that I purchased was sold by Pfaltzgraff. It was sold about the same time as our"By Request" items were sold. I do not remember if it was in the same catalog-I think it may have been.I think I had mine shipped with my order. The dome I have is really nice heavy glass with a small round handle on top. It fits very nicely on the "By Request" tray-at the very edge of the blue sponging. I do not have a dome for my original cake plate.I think at one time someone had suggested a plastic one that they had found to fit it nicely and I did not like the look of the plastic with the dishes-just my opinion.

Thanks for the information. It appears that I have the same dome that you have. I found it with the original cake plate. It is deceptively heavy. I pulled out the "By Request" tray to see how the dome fit on it and instead of putting it back in the cabinet I hung it in our dining area. That makes 24 America pieces on the walls of our kitchen and dining area, including the measuring cups and scoops. Running out of space!
Pottery Barn sells two sizes of domes. Not sure how they would fit. Can't check anymore since I finally left my second job there. It was tough giving back my discount card ( Aargh!!!), but now I'll finally have some time for myself. I'm supposed to be retired, but for the last 3 years I have had 2 jobs. Maybe, I will actually paint some America and Yorktowne stuff now.
